UCADC
2009 Program Information
Too
Good for Drugs
With
a sharp focus on education
and prevention among
our youth, the
UCADC has successfully
implemented a
drug awareness
program in the
Middle School
and High School.
Too Good for Drugs™ is
a school-based prevention
program designed to
reduce risk factors
and enhance protective
factors related to
alcohol, tobacco and
other drug (ATOD)
use among students.
The program builds
five essential life
skills: goal setting,
decision making, bonding
with pro-social others,
communicating effectively,
and identifying & managing
emotions.
With
the support of our
school administrators
and teachers, this
program is being taught
to our 7th and 9th
grade students each
year.
OLWEUS
Bullying Prevention
The
Union County Anti-Drug
Coalition is also
implementing the
Olweus Bullying
Prevention Program in
our public schools
in grades K – 8. The Olweus
[pronounced Ol-VEY-us]
Bullying Prevention Program is
a comprehensive, school-wide program
designed for use in elementary,
middle, or junior high schools.
Its goals are to reduce and prevent
bullying problems among school
children and to improve peer relations
at school.
The
program has been found
to reduce bullying among children, improve
the social climate
of classrooms, and reduce related
antisocial behaviors.
We are in year one
of the implementation
process which involves
the training of all school staff
including administrators,
teachers, counselors,
cafeteria workers, maintenance
workers and bus drivers.
Next year the program
will be introduced to the students
at the classroom level.
UCADC
Student Board of Directors
The
UCADC Student Board
of Directors was
also created this
past year.
This includes fourteen high
school students,
four from each
grade, with students
representing the
public school, home school and
the alternative school.
These
students have committed themselves
to being drug free and to
promote our mission
among their peers.
They do research projects
for their newspaper
column which is published
monthly in the North
Georgia News under
their heading SSNAP – Students
Saying No, And Proud. They
also assist in fund
raisers and educational
presentations.
Graduating
seniors, who meet
the criteria, are
also eligible for
a college scholarship.
